About

It started with a rainy morning and nowhere to go

Taru is a café we're building for families like ours: somewhere the coffee is good, the kids have room to play, and everyone feels welcome to stay a while.

The idea

A place for little kids, and the people who bring them

When you have a small kid in Seattle, the rainy months can feel long. There aren't many indoor places to go, and it's hard to find one where you can sit down with a coffee while they play. We wanted somewhere like that for ourselves, and we figured other families nearby might too.

So Taru is a neighborhood café where most of the room is the Grove: a place to climb, crawl, and build, sized for toddlers. Play is part of coming in. You settle in with a coffee, and they go explore.

What it's like here

It's lively.

Mornings are busy and full of little voices. We think that's a lovely sound, and nobody will hush anyone.

Play together.

The Grove is for kids and their grown-ups. Stay nearby, join in when you like, and enjoy your coffee.

Everyone's welcome.

Kids or no kids, you're welcome here. If you'd just like a good coffee and a warm seat, that's us too.
